RJ Torching, Inc. was established in 1984 by Gerald Roughton ("Jerry"). Jerry was no stranger to the scrap iron business. From 1974 through 1984, prior to establishing RJ Torching, Inc., he was a partner of Oakland Iron & Metal in Pontiac, Michigan. RJ Torching soon became one of the most elite portable processors of scrap iron and metal in the United States. Then, the Slogan was, "We burn Michigan", and that's what we did.
After doing small jobs for the next four years, in 1988 RJ Torching was awarded their first interior demo plant tear-out at the Goodyear plant in Jackson, Michigan. It was now apparent, we could continue this and become a competitor in the business. In the same year, RJ Torching was also awarded their first "service" contract at Jackson Iron & Metal, which is now known internationally as OmniSource Corporation, a subsidiary of Steel Dynamics, Inc.
In 1995, our experience expanded as we continued doing outstanding service work at OmniSource. While our service work continued for OmniSource, RJ Torching Inc., was awarded another interior demo plant tear-out contract by Jackson Iron & Metal Co. This project was located at the GM Willow Run Assembly Plant. That project spring boarded us into 1998 with our next two interior demo tear-outs for the Navistar Corporation located in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Chicago, Illinois. This led to our second service contract, once again for OmniSource, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The service industry portion of RJ Torching's business had taken off from 1999-2003. We started cutting all over the country with multiple contracts including train derailments, larger scale demo tear-outs, coal mining work and locomotive dismantling. By 2005, we specialized in purchasing and removing stamping presses all over Michigan.
RJ Torching purchased our first scrap recycling facility located on Dort Highway in Flint, Michigan in 2005. This was a major stepping stone for RJ Torching. The 5.5 acre facility currently operates as a full service scrap and processing yard including heavy offloading capabilities. Since then, RJ Torching has added two more scrap yards to our family. Heavy Metal Scrap, LLC, which is located in Battle Creek, Michigan and Vassar Recycling, LLC, which just recently made its way open in Vassar, Michigan.
Jason Roughton, the son of Jerry Roughton, acquired ownership in July, 2009 and is President of RJ Torching, Inc. Jason and his hardworking, dedicated employees continue to strive at having the best customer service and being the safest, most efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly processors of heavy scrap iron and metal, in the industry.
Today, many people recognize us by our Mascot, The Scraprat. The Scraprats held their first Customer Appreciation Day in conjunction with Earth Day in April, 2010. The staff served lunch and gave away promotional items to all the customers that day. Thanks for your continued support. RJ's slogan for the future is:
"IT'S ALL ABOUT THE TONS!"
